Self Care Matters
At Stress Matters we emphasise the importance of self care. Allowing yourself to relax is vital for high performance and your overall wellbeing
Self Care
Self care isn't just important, it's crucial. The adage 'hard work pays off' is often taken to the point where it becomes counterproductive. Your abilities are worn out, you lose sleep and focus. You may think you are working to your full potential, but often you are not working efficiently.
It is easy to neglect self care due to our busy and overwhelming schedules, often believing we do not have the time. However, self care can make you more productive and improve your wellbeing
Self Care and Stress
Stress affects everyone. It impacts the mind and body in powerful ways. Stress sucks energy out of peoples lives, leaving you tired and negative, contributing to emotional imbalances.
There are many practices to help you manage your stress levels. For example, self-calming practices, which combine breathing and focused attention to help relax the mind a body can be extremely valuable. The relaxation response enables you to reduce, and even reverse the negative emotional, mental and physical effects of stress. Reduction in your stress and anxiety levels enhances your immune system, boosts your energy levels and improves your overall wellbeing
What can I do to improve my self care?
Self care is personal, it can often take time to figure how you best relax. Some popular methods of self care include; hiking, running, cooking, yoga and travelling.
Self care is about more than giving yourself time to relax, it also includes your general lifestyle and personal health. Ensuring you are getting adequate sleep and eating healthy also contributes to your wellbeing, and in turn your performance in other areas of life
Wellbeing
There are 4 areas of wellbeing; mental, physical, emotional and spiritual, each relies upon the other. If one area is over or under stressed it can result in suboptimal performance. Self care allows you to devote time and attention to each of these areas, providing balance to your wellbeing.
Examples for nurturing each of these areas include,
Mental; reading or taking up a new skill such as taking a class.
Physical; engaging in movement which brings you joy, whether this be running or dancing and taking time listen to your body and reflect on its needs
Emotional; talking to your friends or family and journaling
Spiritual; simply living in and appreciating the moment. This can be through meditation or even going out for a walk
